Pieter Lategan Title: The Fear For The Coronavirus

People live now in fear. The elderly are the worst hit by the coronavirus. They are weak and do not have the ability to fight the virus.

I drew it from a photo that I got on the internet.

So what do I think about my work?

Lowly I am moving out of the deep waters, and I can feel it looks better. I am proud of myself because I used a photo. The eyes work, the nose is almost there, the mouth is okay, and the ears are good. So yes, I am happy about the sketch. I took a walk to the shop, and the rows were long, and we had to stand outside of the shop. There are only a few people allowed in the shop, so I waited for about 30 minutes outside, and I was out in 6 minutes.

Pieter Lategan Title: Day 2 of Lockdown is Almost Over

Today was the second day of the lockdown in South Africa, and nobody is allowed to go out. Everyone sits at home, and you are only allowed to go to the grocery store, pharmacy, or doctor.

We don’t have an idea of how long it is going to continue. South Africa has a 21-day lockdown. So the sketch, what do I think of it?

I got a photo on the net and I drew it; this photo I got from an artist who uses black and white photos and colors it in. The photo was taken during the Holocaust of a woman. She looks like a man, but you can see she is ill and did not eat.

The artist who colors the black and white photos is Tom Marshall (PhotograFix). He called himself a colorizer and restorer. He is working with some of the world's leading museums, photo archives, and publishers, as well as private commissions and projects undertaken for fun.

So what do I think of my sketch?

Well, I like the ears; that looks good; the eyes are okay; and the mouth. The nose is almost there, and it looks much better, I get the feeling I am starting to understand the draw of a nose. She does not really look sick, but I think the lines are not dark enough. But you can see the woman is not well; there is something wrong with her. I put today's date and year on it, and I think I must continue doing that.

It feels as if someone is dead in the streets and in the shop, and I brought the death feeling to my home where I live and must be happy.

Pencil sketch of a pilot, G.E. Rawson, dated 29 August 1943. He died, and they assume the body was found by the Germans in World War 2, after an attack and the sea of Cherbourg.

I don’t know who the artwork drew, but it has been signed by the artist, and the date is 29 August 1943, the time of the war.

So what do I think of my own work?

Some of the lines are too hard, and they have been drawn from different angles. I create images with continuous, same pencil pressure. That I need help with. But as soon as I get that when I color in with the pencil with practice, I will be happy. The hair works for me, but I could spend more time on it. The eyes are ok, as is the mouth. I like the nose; it is working but still needs to improve. I still need more practice for portrait pencil sketches, but that will I done. I have been busy since last year, November 2019, and worked very hard this month.

Pieter Lategan Title: Rip Sol Kerzner

Solomon (Sol) Kerzner (23 August 1935 – 21 March 2020) was a South African accountant and business magnate.

He founded both of South Africa's largest hotel groups, the Southern Sun Hotel Group and Sun International. He graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and took over the running of his family's hotel chain. His parents owned and operated a chain of kosher hotels.

In 1979, Kerzner developed Sun City, the most ambitious resort project in Africa.

So what do I think of my own work?

I like it; it is sad the man passed away; he was a very good and clever businessman.

Some of the lines are a bit too hard; I draw with an H pencil. The sketch was not drawn exactly in the middle, but that is fine. I got the photo from the internet from the Getty Photos website, and the photo was taken by a person with the name of Kevin Mazur/WireImage.
