Paavo Nurmi, the top-ranked athlete in track and field at the Olympic Games, won 12 total medals won12.
With coronavirus all over the world, I am not sure if the Olympics in Japan are going to happen. I thought it was good to draw Paavo from a photo that I got from the Internet. 

He was a Finnish (13 June 1897 – 2 October 1973) middle-distance and long-distance runner and had the nickname “Flying Finn. He set 22 official world records at distances between 1500 meters and 20 kilometers. 

He left school at the age of twelve to provide for his family. In 1912, he was inspired by the Olympic feats of Hannes Kolehmainen and began developing a strict training program.

Nurmi was suspended before the 1932 Games by the IAAF council that questioned his amateur status, and in 1934 he retired from running.

 

Numi later coached Finnish runners, raised funds for Finland during the Winter War, and worked as a haberdasher, building contractor, and share trader, eventually becoming one of Finland’s richest people. 

So what do I think of my work? 

I drew it from a black-and-white photo and felt that worked very well. It is almost there; I think I did a good job with the eyes but struggled with the nose. The mouth was a bit difficult with the v-shaped lips he had. I really need to work on a background idea that will work for my portrait studies.

I am very proud of myself today. I did two portrait sketches and want to try to do that every day. I get tired, but I need much more practice before I can think of starting painting in oil, but that is my goal.

This is a redraw of English artist Robert Lenkiewicz (31 December 1941 – 5 August 2002). He was one of South West England’s most celebrated modern artists.

He created up to 10,000 works. His themed ‘projects’ investigated hidden communities or difficult social issues such as Suicide and Death.

In 1981, he staged his own death, announcing his demise in local newspapers.

Lenkiewicz was born in London in 1941. His parents fled Nazi Germany in 1939 and arrived in London as penniless refugees.

Unaffected by contemporary art trends, he preferred the paintings in the National Gallery. Inspired by figures like Albert Schweitzer, a polymath, and Danilo Dolci, an Italian social activist known as the "Gandhi of Sicily."

He painted vagrant and street alcoholic individuals.

Art critic David Lee noted: "Robert's greatest gift was to show us that an artist could be truly concerned about social and domestic issues and try to express this through figurative painting."

His projects focused on mental handicap (1976), Old Age (1979), and Death (1982), shedding light on marginalized communities.

He also explored societal taboos in projects like Jealousy (1977), Orgasm (1978), Suicide (1980), and Sexual behavior (1983).

The sketch I redrew was of John Kynance a few minutes before death from cancer in 1973. Inscribed: “vagrant character of rare qualities. Completely out of tune with his thuggish companions.”

My thoughts on the redraw? The person doesn't look like they are dying, just poor. But at least I made an attempt.

Pieter Lategan Title: Study 1 Cosetta Bimbi

I got this photo from a Fashion Studies Journal on the Internet, and all I know of the woman whom I had drawn is her name. I did a search on the internet and all I could find is a jewelry store connected to her name in Italy and that the photo was taken in 1960.

I think this photo or sketch will bring me to an end of the collection 3 paintings 2. The reason why I called it painting is because I thought to get myself ready to paint in this collection. So I thought after I did a lot of research about the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood that I want to draw. I tried to find photos of the 1960s and use the sixty styles to create in this collection. So this collection will be only pencil sketches

So what do I think about my own work?

The cheek on the right-hand side is too round. The eyes look better than my other work, but I spent a lot of time on the eyes. The hair needs work, but the photo which I will show during this process of creating it you will see what I mean.

Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini (1902–1989) was the leader of the 1979 Iranian Revolution that overthrew the Shah of Iran and established the Islamic Republic. He became the country’s first Supreme Leader, the highest political and religious authority in Iran. Khomeini strongly opposed Western influence in Iran, especially policies that gave U.S. military personnel legal immunity under the Shah’s government.

After Khomeini’s death in 1989, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei succeeded him as Supreme Leader, a position he still holds today. Iran’s leadership has continued to express strong opposition to U.S. involvement in the Middle East, reflecting long-standing political tensions between the two countries.

Pieter Lategan's Opinion about Irma Stern's Notes

 

I am busy working through Irma Stern's journal. The drawings and entries for p17 and p18 are shown above. I quote:
