Fashion Icon Jackie Kennedy and Inductee into the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame

Wikipedia • John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, was assassinated while riding in a presidential motorcade through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963.

Since 1996, when I was a student at High School Erasmus in Bronkhorstspruit—a small, often overlooked town on the eastern side of Pretoria—I developed a profound connection with the subject of history. One of my six chosen subjects was taught by Mr. Frans Engelbrecht, a teacher whose story remains etched in my memory for its tragic end. Though his life ended sadly, I now reflect on how brilliant and insightful he was, particularly in his understanding of historical events.

One chapter that stood out to me was the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, a pivotal topic in my final exams. Studying this historical moment not only deepened my appreciation for history but also influenced my perspective as an artist and designer. It sparked a curiosity about the intersection of history, politics, art, and culture. The lessons I learned in that classroom continue to shape how I view the world and inspire my journey to become a good designer.

In 1965, Jacqueline Kennedy was inducted into the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame, cementing her status as a global fashion icon. Her signature style, characterized by clean-cut suits, sleeveless A-line dresses, pillbox hats, and low-heel pumps, became emblematic of 1960s elegance and sophistication. Even after her tenure as First Lady, Jackie continued influencing fashion trends, embracing wide-leg pantsuits, silk headscarves, and oversized sunglasses, further solidifying her legacy as a timeless style icon.

In a groundbreaking move, President Donald Trump has authorized the release of all classified files related to President John F. Kennedy's assassination, effective January 24, 2025. This unprecedented access offers historians, artists, and the public a chance to delve deeper into that pivotal event's political and cultural impact.

The assassination also inspired numerous songs that captured the nation's grief and shock. One notable example is "He Was a Friend of Mine" by The Byrds, released in 1965, which pays tribute to President Kennedy.
